As the vegan milk chocolate company that is for the animals, people, and the planet, we couldn’t let today go by without sharing some ways that you can make a difference in the lives of animals and the planet right now.
There are so many simple but powerful actions we can take to create lasting change in the world around us!
Whether that’s planting a bed of bee-friendly flowers or choosing to spend your money with environmentally-conscious companies, what we do matters!
Here are 5 ways and easy actions you can take to stand up for animals, the environment, and all of its wonderful inhabitants (including your fellow humans) this Earth Day and beyond!
1. Choose companies who care 🤝
What you buy matters. Don’t underestimate the power of spending your hard-earned money on items from businesses that are ethical, eco-friendly, and actively helping animals and the planet.
An estimated 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. 80% of all marine debris comes from that plastic!
This plastic also really hurts (and even kills) marine wildlife like seals, sea birds, and endangered sea turtles when they’re entangled in it and ingest it (accidentally or not)!
Did you know that 90% of sea birds have plastic inside their stomachs?
That’s one of the many reasons why we’re so glad to be no longer using plastic in any of our new chocolate bar packaging.
Our vegan milk chocolate also supports animals in need. To date, we’ve donated over $5,500 to farmed animal sanctuaries and rescues across the country.
We’re not the only ones who are putting our money where our mouth is when making our mission and values and reality.
Many other companies, large and small, and independent artists and businesses are also paying it forward for animals and the planet.
For example, the clothing companies Vegan Veins, Eden Was Vegan, and Basik Make are all companies that sell ethically and sustainably made clothing.
They use materials like 100% organic cotton or bamboo, print their products with water-based non-toxic inks and use sweatshop-free factories.
They also ship out every order in biodegradable and eco-friendly packaging, and give back part of their proceeds directly to animal sanctuaries!
There are so many businesses like these. You just have to look!
2. Try the dairy-free options 🥥
From oat milk coffee creamers to coconut ice cream to cashew cheeses and soy yogurts, there’s a diverse world of dairy-free options that’s yours for tasting!
Nut or plant-based “dairy” products require much less water and land use than traditional cow’s milk products and are cleaner for the environment.
Consider these facts: A single cow can drink 35 to 45 gallons of water a day. Manure and waste runoff from cows and dairy farms is a leading cause of water, land, and air pollution, greenhouse gases, and deforestation.
That’s one more reason to buy our dairy-free and always vegan milk chocolate bars!
3. Cook more plant-based meals 🌱
As a vegan mylk chocolate company, we know that switching to a plant-based diet is one of the most environmentally-friendly actions you can take!
Plant-based diets generate fewer greenhouse gases, have a smaller carbon footprint, and use less land and water use than diets that include eating animals and their products.
Not to mention how much kinder choosing a vegan diet is for the animals! Eating animals and their products, like eggs and cow’s milk, directly supports factory farming. And who wants to be part of hurting the 10 billion animals kept in factory farms?
4. Switch to products that aren’t tested on animals 🐀
From lipstick to laundry detergent to contact lenses and cleaning products, over 115 million animals are experimented on and killed in labs worldwide every year.
Many cosmetic, hygienic, and cleaning product companies use cruel and outdated skin and eye irritation, injection, and lethal dose tests on rabbits, mice, monkeys, rats, pigs, and even dogs like beagles who are chosen because of their sweet, gentle and trusting personalities!
There are at least 50 non-animal alternative tests to these abusive and deadly ones. One of the best ways to make sure you’re not part of the problem is to look for labeling that indicates the product is not tested on animals.
The Leaping Bunny and PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies symbol are the golden standards for indicating which products are cruelty-free.
Here are some products to consider buying cruelty-free
- Deodorants and perfumes
- Lotions, hand creams, and face serums
- Hair dyes, shampoo, soap, and styling products
- Toothpaste and mouthwash
- Disinfectant wipes, cleaning sprays, and laundry detergent
- Mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, and other cosmetics
5. Plant flowers and trees that attract bees 🐝
Did you know that bees are vital to the health of our planet? Without these tiny but mighty pollinators, we wouldn’t be able to eat many of the foods we love so much.
In the US alone, 100 crops rely on bees and pollinators to grow, including berries, fruit trees, almonds, and squash. Worldwide, bees pollinate 35% of all crops. The USDA says that “every three out of four bites of food” is thanks to pollinators like bees.
Pesticides and loss of habitats are leading to widespread declines and colony collapses in the bee population.
There are ways we can help, though! One way is right in our own backyard.
Jamie Woodrum, the founder of Humble Honee, the bee-free vegan honey, and friend of Trupo Treats, says that planting pollinator-friendly gardens, including organic vegetable patches, is a small action with a significant impact. Plants, flowers, and herbs like lavender, marigolds, sunflowers, sage, and thyme are all attractive to bees and support bee populations.
